Marian Dental Clinic Urges Community to Avoid Emergency Room for Dental Pain

TOPEKA, KS – (March 24, 2020)  – In response to COVID-19, Marian Dental Clinic is now focused on serving patients with dental emergencies to help alleviate the local hospital emergency departments. Normally a full-service dental care provider, the clinic has implemented temporary protocols for triage and is limiting procedures based on recommendations from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the American Dental Association (ADA).

Patients seeking emergency dental care services must first call to schedule an appointment and then pass a health screen prior to entering the building. Visitor restrictions at this time do not allow for unscheduled visitors in the building. The waiting room will not be available and patients are strongly encouraged to come alone or have their companion wait in the car. We understand and are sensitive to each individual patient’s situation and will do our best to safely accommodate individual needs.

“The health of our patients and providers is our top priority and we are taking extra precautions to ensure that everyone stays healthy,” Krista Hahn, executive director of the Marian Dental Clinic said.

If you believe you have a dental emergency or are experiencing dental pain, the clinic’s triage team is available via phone during business hours. A triage team member will assess your dental emergency, determine the urgency, connect you with resources and/or schedule an appointment when appropriate. If you have a scheduled appointment and find yourself displaying any common flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, body aches, etc), please notify our office immediately.

“We also want to be encouraging for those who have had their dental appointments canceled. We will call our patients to reschedule their appointment in the future,” Hahn said. “In the meantime, you should continue your oral health routine at home, do not share your toothbrush with others, and visit our Facebook page for additional oral health tips.”

Prevention remains our best line of defense regarding COVID-19. We recommend clinic patrons check the KDHE website regarding COVID-19 before coming to the clinic. https://govstatus.egov.com/coronavirus. The Marian Dental Clinic will continue to monitor and follow the most up-to-date recommendations and guidelines from the CDC, federal, state and local agencies.
